~A Wu Fei's
Story~
Timeline : A.C. 203
Wu Fei popped one eye open when he heard vague cry of
battle above the relatively safe basement. He lifted his face toward the source
of the battle and frowned. He almost forgot about the OZ army. He didn’t even
notice the time. The birth of his daughter earlier must have exhausted his
entire energy and brought him into deep sleep.
He
glanced to his right and saw Sally, leaning against his shoulder, sleeping
peacefully despite the disarray of her surroundings. In her arms, the baby was
also sleeping soundly, her tiny features glowing and beautiful as she sucked
her little thumb, apparently dreaming pleasantly. Wu Fei smiled tenderly in
spite of his growing anxiety. He wondered in a flash whether every father would
feel the same way as he was feeling at the very moment. It was a warm, tender
feeling he couldn’t even describe. All of this experience was new to him to
even comprehend.
Another
explosion went off above and he was transferred back to reality, feeling
utterly uneasy all of sudden. The explosion even made his daughter stir and
bawl in alarm to his dismay. Eventually, the cry woke Sally up and comforted
the little baby with her soft, loving voice. Wu Fei shifted his body and
circled his arm protectively around his wife’s shoulders, his face grim. Sally
looked up at him, her features worried, her eyes intensified with fear. She
tightened her hold on her baby subconsciously and drew her to her bosom, in a
flash feared for her daughter’s future.
“What’s
happening?” her round eyes questioned Wu Fei, wide with apprehension, “ The
explosion…”
“The
energy shield could only keep the attacks for a few hours, as expected.” Wu
Fei’s eyes travelled above, determined and anxious with sudden realisation :
the colony was on its way of destruction and they were trapped on the basement.
He couldn’t help, and it was his responsibility to protect the colony. Of
course, he could excape the basement just easily, but he had a new
responsibility : to protect his wife and his baby. To leave them alone in the
paw of danger wouldn’t be too chivalrous thing to do. Especially he had vowed
not ever put his family in danger above all, since a few years ago when he
first married Sally Po. Bringing them with him wouldn’t be a good option, for
it would only restrict his movements. It was always easier to act alone,
without any assistance. He was capable of protecting himself, anyway. However,
with a wife and a child in tow, he…doubted his capability. It was almost
impossible to shield everyone from some possible explosions. And it also did no
good to die on them if he happened to be the one shielding them from the
explosions; there were more advanced dangers on their way.
His
gaze travelled back to his wife’s face, his eyebrows, knitted together in
concern. He had never been in this kind of situation before. He had always been
alone when he did his missions, and he was not responsible for someone’s life.
He had never been concerned with protecting people’s lives. It had been always
like that ever since he piloted Gundam Shenlong…ever since his first wife’s
decease. Mei Lan was the first and the last woman he protected from war since
his Gundam piloting period. It wasn’t because he didn’t care about Sally, no.
He always cared for her deep within his heart, or else he would never marry
her. He merely kept the sentimentality of what people defined as love away from
his mind. He decided love would only distract his logic and brought him into
nothingness. He would be destroyed if he loved. More than that, Sally was, in a
way, more than capable of defending herself. She might not be a kung fu expert like
Mei Lan did, but she was more formidable and furtive in a sense. His wife was a
strategist. She planned everything to the smallest of thing, never leaving
something out of her astute eyes. And she was absolutely competent at operating
a gun or a rifle. That was the very reason why he never really worried about
her. She was always holding her ground, unlike the reckless and careless Mei
Lan.
However,
he couldn’t help but be bothered by his wife’s noted incapability at the time
being. She couldn’t even lift a limb without his assistance. She was weak. She
was vulnerable to her very bones. And the baby…one crush would kill the sweet
little girl instantly. Even the thought of his daughter being slaughtered by
some OZ soldiers made him shuddered in disgust and winced in the pain he never
thought he could feel. It was imaginary, but it felt real, crushing his mind
with an unbearably pressure of stress. He had to save the colony, but he also
had to protect his family. He knew at least his family would be safe for
sometime in the little secluded basement, but he couldn’t help ruminating the
other endless likelihood. What if the OZ army accidentally found the hidden
entrance and barged inside? Hi family would be in the gravest of danger.
Especially, recognizing Sally, they could use her and the baby as pawns against
him. As hostages.
A
soft, thin hand landed gently on his cheek, caressing it affectionately as it
coaxed his head to turn around and drowned himself in the warmth of Sally’s
blue eyes. They were so warm they melted his heart, causing his stomach to turn
into jelly all of sudden. His guts were tightened at the sight of her gentle
and loving expression as guilty started to pool. Covering her hand with his
own, he rubbed it slowly against his own cheek, sensing the texture of her palm
absorbedly as it grazed against his skin, unbelievably soft even after her full
training as a soldier. Slowly he dragged it to his mouth and kissed it
tantalisingly without releasing her eyes, kept it on his cheek as he put his
other hand on her pale, damp cheek, touching it with his fingertips.
“I’m
fine, Wu Fei.” She smiled as she attempted to reassure him, her other hand
travelled to cover Wu Fei’s hand and squeeze it gently, “I’m fine. You needn’t
to worry about us. We’ll be fine…we’ll be safe down here.”
Wu
Fei drew both his hands and placed them on each of his knee, his eyes darkened
in both realisation and bewilderment. He just realised Sally’s understanding
wasn’t only a front. After all this time he was being married to her, he always
thought Sally was only pretending to understand him, to make him feel better.
However, he realised at the moment Sally truly fully understood him, his
personality and his motives, his way of thinking, everything. He was more than
satisfied having her pretending to be so considerate, but he never did hope she
would actually come to the point where she was able to tell what he thought
without voicing it out loud. He was confused, because he never knew the reason
why Sally would ever understand him to the core. All he comprehended was he
shunned Sally from all his plans, his thought, everything. He decided
everything by himself, even when it came to family affairs. For him, there was
no way a woman would interfere in some important decision-makings. Moreover, he
needed freedom. He couldn’t let a woman mess with his mind, now or later, even
his wife.
He
closed every door to his mind and heart.
didn’t want everyone sneak into his realm and destroy his little world, his sanctuary.
There he could feel his strongest authority. His privacy.
But
Sally…Sally, with her own gentle ways, somehow managed to steal a glimpse into
the private sanctuary of his, long enough to taste his persona. To understand
him not as someone who used to pilot a Gundam Shenlong, as someone who was
outlooked a chauvinist or an arrogant youngster. She somehow was able to break
through his barriers and peeled it off one by one, skin by skin, to reveal the
glory of his inner realm.
No
woman had ever succeeded. None at all.
But
why?
How?
It
didn’t matter. He knew the answer already. Sally gave him freedom, even more
than he needed. She never crossed his way, never intentionally tackled his
plans or opinions. If she disagreed with something, she would remind him with
the gentlest possible way she could find, without totally opposing him. She
gave everything to him. She gave him even her life, her very self. That was the
reason he opened himself more to her than to anybody else, and the reason why
he couldn’t ever abandon her even if the colony was on the brink of
annihilation.
Wu
Fei shook his head as he curved his lips into a thin, bitter smile, then
slumped his body beside the woman, his woman, and circled one arm around
her sagged shoulders, drawing her close to him. Strange. In most situations, he
would frown in disgust even upon the imagination of hugging her. However, he
did it with some ease he had never sensed before, as if his arm belonged there,
on the circle of her small, fragile shoulders. He chuckled ironically as he
sensed Sally dropped her head tiredly on his broad chest. Afterwards, if they
ever survived the attack, where would this all go? It might be only his sense
of responsibility triggered him to do the thing he most despised : being romantic.
What a strange circumstances this occurred in.
Vaguely,
in drowsiness, Sally whispered softly, “Wu Fei, I love you…”
Wu
Fei’s eyes widened as he caught the phrase, but instead of scolding her for her
display of sentimentality as he usually did, he merely put his cheek on the
crown on her head and tightened his embrace.
There
was always a sweet pain in his chest whenever he saw her eyes. It happened for
as long as he could remember; he didn’t know exactly when it started. Was it
love? Impossible. He was incapable of love. He wanted to love and to be loved,
but he didn’t know how. He didn’t know how to do it, how to express it. Hell,
he didn’t know what love itself meant. Many people told them they had a match
made in heaven, but he doubted it. Apart of being understanding to each other,
he was never being romantic to her, unlike other ‘in love’ couples. Not that he
cared.
No.
That
was not the truth.
He
really wanted to love her, albeit he couldn’t.
At
least…he could pretend they truly loved each other for the time being.
Heero
covered his ears with his pillow as he heard the beeping sound of the
communication system across the room he shared with Relena. It had been the
third months of his marriage to her, and he was denied the pure bliss of
sleeping during those three months. Not that he objected, but he merely
demanded for a few more hours of sleeping before he had to wake up the next day
to face his hell of a lot of work. He groaned as he heard the persistent
beeping sound, refusing to accept its defeat. He buried his head even deeper
beneath the piles of soft pillows, somehow managed to get his entire body
invisible, with the help of the thick quilt. His muscle tensed as he felt
Relena’s soft hand caressed his neck, expecting her to order him to receive the
message, but he exhaled faintly in relief when he sensed her stirred from the
bed and padded across the room to receive the call. He smiled as he heard the
rustle of Relena’s kimono fabric and continued his dream time, assured Relena
would take care of whatever was going on out there. Even a bomb in a colony
couldn’t disturb his sleeping time. It was the only luxury he always craved.
And his woman was always terrific. She knew exactly what he needed most after a
long day of work or a long sport. Some sleep would be fine, thank you
very much.
“Hello?”
His ears perked up a little bit as he heard Relena’s silky voice, gentle and
low. She sounded a bit tired, though. Must be her work during the day. She had
told him she had a rough day. A twinge of regret started to gnaw his mind
despite his effort to maintain his ignorance, “Ah, Quatre? Yes,
yes…everything’s fine. No, no, that’s okay, I’m not mad at all. And I’m not
always beautiful, Quatre. I’m in dishevelled state at the moment.” Then a
chuckle escaped. Under his pillows, Heero swore viciously at Quatre. How dare
he to flirt with someone’s wife? He never knew Quatre to have that streak.
Living with several sisters might form him to what he was now, a total
gentleman when it came to ladies, but he never expected the other man to be
flirty. However, he ceased worrying as he continued eavesdropping the
conversation.
“Yes?”
He could hear tense gathered in her voice, and as he peeked from beneath the
pillows, he could see her raking her disarrayed hair in apprehension, “You
sure? Wasn’t it only technical problems? Please tell me, Quatre.” He saw Quatre
shaking his head on the blinking monitor, looking very grim and miserable.
“So
L5 Colony…”
The
conversation had Heero’s full attention by then. He lifted the pillows of his
head and reached for his woollen robe, securing the strap tightly before
strolling across the room to his wife’s side, planting a hand on her small
shoulder. Relena merely acknowledged his presence with a worried glance as she
continued paying full attention to what Quatre had to say. Sighing heavily, the
former Gundam pilot switched the system’s mode so he could also have a part in
the conversation.
“…now
under OZ’s attack. We had tried contacting Wu Fei a few times already, but all
communication system was aborted. We had no response. At all.” He could sense
the slightest of panic beneath the calm exterior of the young blonde Arabian.
“They apparently planned and sabotaged everything before proceeding with the
attack. I wonder who was planning this. I would say L5 Colony’s defence was
among the strongest, with its energy shield, but…the man behind this attack was
a true strategist. Not to mention Wu Fei is quite a good strategist as well…”
“Quit
praising the OZ bastard, Quatre!” Heero snarled unintentionally at Quatre,
causing the other man to jerk back a bit in surprise. He was fully awake at the
moment, and the wheels in his head started to assess the whole situation. Wu
Fei and L5 colony were in emergency. And it took days or weeks to reach the
colony, even with the fastest mobile suit. Wu Fei’s colony was the furthest one
from earth as far as he was concerned. If only he was in L1 colony…it was the
nearest situated from the L5 colony.
Heero
straightened his back as the soldier in him returned, his eyes grew darker and
darker in seconds. It was almost impossible to send immediate reinforcement to
L5 Colony from Earth. He practically could do nothing. If only his Gundam Wing
was not destroyed a few years back then…
He
turned slightly to Relena, whom clutched her hands on her chest, he warm brown
eyes wide with worries. His wife had had enough for one day. He shouldn’t
bother her with the upcoming problem; she was way too tired already with the
diplomatic matters. His face features softened, he smiled vaguely at he as he
caressed the length of her hair, faint stress signalled in his voice as he
urged, “Go to bed. I’ll handle this.”
“B-but
Heero…”
“Go
to bed.” Heero repeated his words more sternly, his chin gesturing to his bed, their
bed. “Everything would be fine. Trust me.”
Reluctantly
Relena obliged. However, she kept looking behind her back as she trudged back
to their bed, worries made her features look hollow and pale. Heero understood.
Relena was worried for Sally. She was nine months pregnant as far as he
concerned, and it was almost her due time. What if something happened? Heero
shuddered inwardly at the thought although he never showed it. He couldn’t
imagine it if the same thing happened to his woman. Gently, he reassured her,
“I’ll check on Sally. Now, you go to bed. I’ll make sure everything’s fine from
here.” His reassurance somehow managed to calm her down, for she rewarded him
with her sweetest smile. Heero’s heart melted. He never could stand a chance
against the meek expression of hers. Now he had to find any ways to accomplish
his promise to his wife, which was tough as far as he could see.
“Now,
Quatre.” He returned to the conversation, raking his thick brown hair as he
thought of what to do next, “Contact Trowa and Duo, they would need the most
detailed information they could get from you.”
Quatre
smirked ever so slightly at that. Always the bossy and iron-head leader. He was
telling him that as if it was easy to locate two of their friends. He bet Heero
didn’t really know the whereabouts of their other two teammates, and that was
the reason he actually ordered him to find those two. Always the ignorant one.
With Trowa, it was understandable. He had always moved around the colonies with
his circus troupe, anyway. But Duo? The man had left a message of his
whereabouts to each of the team as long as he remembered, so Heero must be
quite informed, too. And that was the problem. Duo was still in the process of
reconciling his marriage with Hilde together with their children, holidaying in
a resort near Lake Elizabeth, in the L2 colony. He wouldn’t be too pleased to
forcefully alter his plan, no matter how serious the situation. Oh, Quatre knew
Duo would certainly do it out of friendship, but he was also well aware of the
significance of the vacation for Duo. Duo, who was once making a mistake by
leaving Hilde for some reasons, intended to patch things up between him and his
wife, but he would have to leave his plan in hold because of the commotions of
L5 Colony. He almost groaned as he imagined Hilde’s disappointment at Duo’s
sudden retreat. And he was the one who was given the job to contact everybody. How
depressing. And here he had the urge to tell Heero to find them and talk to
them himself, but he restrained himself. It was an emergency and he didn’t have
time to fool around. Knowing Heero, he would be less than diplomatic while
talking to him, which in the end probably caused several misconceptions. Heero
was right in a way; it was his duty to inform them and request their
assistance, albeit without the Gundams. However, he needed to clarify something
first to Heero.
Leaning
on the desk of his own communication system, Quatre looked straight in the
cobalt blue eyes of the former Gundam Wing pilot, probing the depths of them
silently. He could sense Heero’s restlessness under his scrutiny, but he
enjoyed himself very much. He only began the talking after a few seconds,
almost smiling as he heard Heero’s restrained sigh of relief, “And what about
you, Heero? Don’t you need detailed information as well?”
He
could hear the other man swore venomously under his breath, before mumbling,
“Spill,”
Quatre
hardened his expression and straightened his stance, a sign he was in serious
mode at the time being. He never let go of Heero’s eyes as he explained the
whole situation in details but briefly, leaving no time to dwell upon
unimportant subjects anymore. “So far I think they would use the main generator
to shield their capital city. However, I think L5 Colony could only hold back
for a few days from now. Hell, their shield might be down even as we talked
now, due to power failure. I’ve sent the Maganacs for reinforcement, but it was
at least two days before they reach L5 Colony. Until then, we have no clue. We
could only pray there wasn’t too much damage done. All the redevelopment would
be in vain.”
“Quatre,
wait.” Heero cut him in, holding up a hand as he spoke, “OZ must have realised
the impact of this attack. They declared open war to us, apparently. They might
have greater force behind them, supporting their moves. There was no way they
could stand a chance against the reinforcements from the other four colonies,
including Earth.”
“Or
they might have other plans…” Quatre offered as he rubbed his chin in deep
contemplation, “They might even set a bargain.”
Shaking
his head, Heero could only smirk a little as he reached for the system’s remote
controller, indicating his wish to end the conversation, “Perhaps, but we
wouldn’t know for the time being. We had to wait for the Maganacs to contact us
in order to know the whole story. Now, will you proceed with our plan?”
“And
let you sleep soundly in the embrace of your wife?” Quatre griped, a hint of
sarcasm in his seemingly calm voice, “I don’t think so, Perfect Soldier.
This is our responsibility. We do it together.”
“So?”
Heero lifted his chin haughtily, crossed his arms in front of his chest in a
defensive stance, “I have to raise early tomorrow; the army department needs me
for some translations of advance blue prints for the improved mobile suit. I
have to explain the technical for their dummy brains.”
“And
I have to feed my whole family, posing as the president director of Winner Oil
Company, if I was allowed to remind you,” Quatre muttered under his breath,
although he remained calm and patient, emphasising the fact he was really
serious about his request this time. And noone could dodge the demand of a very
determined Quatre, not even Heero.
“Oh,
hell.” Was the only word Heero emitted from his lips. He nodded lazily at the
end as he agreed reluctantly, “I’ll contact Trowa. You’ll have to deal with
Duo.”
Quatre
nodded. “Fine,” he replied, inwardly sighing in relief as he finally came to
agreement with Heero. It was very difficult to convince Heero to do something
against his will. He wondered what miracle caused the other man to accept his
request.
As
Heero was about to turn off the communication system, Quatre once again cut in,
insisting him to pay his attention again at the other man. “They are going to
be alright, Heero…” Quatre smiled as he reassured him softly, with a brotherly
touch in his voice, “Wu Fei and the others would be fine.”
“I’m
not worried.” Heero glared at the blonde man as he retorted almost vehemently,
then shut the communication system off. Afterwards, he tried to dismiss what
Quatre had just told him, but he found himself thinking in circle. In this
case, he was, although he would rather die than admitting it, worrying about Wu
Fei and Sally’s state of security. He had planned to go straight back to bed
after the call, but he found himself unable to do so. Instead, he opened his
communication system once again and busied himself by contacting various
personnel and people. And there, in the middle of the blackness of the vast
chamber, saved the blinking light of the monitor, Heero’s voice echoed
smoothly.
“Trowa,
it’s the L5 Colony…needs help. Wu Fei and Sally…”
“I’m sorry to tell you this, but this is all I could found
from the emergency food storage,” Wu Fei conceded gravely as he knelt down
beside Sally, a sack of food he managed to gather in his hand, “When I reached
the spot, the content was either ruined or already out dated.”
Sally
was sitting against the wall, a thick blanket covering her legs. She was
singing a lullaby to calm her baby down, but her voice was put into a halt as
she acknowledged Wu Fei’s presence. Wu Fei didn’t make any sound at all, but
she could sense his movement from the stir of the air around the area. She
smiled as she shifted a little to provide some place for him. “That’s okay, Wu
Fei. At least we could spend a few days here and think of our next move.” She
told him with such an optimism that managed to lift his worries even if it was
only a little.
Wu
Fei gave his wife a stiff smile before finally drawing some bread from inside
the sack he was holding. Then, almost gently, he shoved the bread onto Sally’s wife
and ordered, “Eat. You need strength to feed the baby.”
Accepting
the bread with one hand, Sally gave him a mischievous smile as she proceeded to
chew it slowly, “Baby? No name to honour her arrival in our small family? Are
you going to start the trend Trowa started a long time ago by calling her ‘No
Name’?” Her little smile broke into a grin as she caught Wu Fei’s faint scowl.
Then, with a more serious tone, she added with a reprimanded look, “Stop
calling her ‘Baby’. She’s your daughter, so think of something.”
“Fine,
fine!” Wu Fei breathed in exasperation. He had never been comfortable with this
kind of matters. However, he intended to regard his wife’s words seriously as
he sagged against the wall and contemplated some names that he actually remembered.
He was not a name expert, but he was willing to try this time. Sally was right,
he couldn’t let the baby without a name for too long. He couldn’t introduce his
baby to everyone without a name, indeed, so he had to.
He
frowned as he heard a chuckle and whirled his head sharply to Sally’s
direction. There, he noticed her laughing at him while covering her mouth at
the same time, for the first time in the last few days looking young and happy
once again. Wu Fei knew his wife had just stung his pride, but he felt nothing
at the moment, for instance. Instead, he was smiling as he watched her laughing
face, so carefree and without worry, despite the going-ons above the basement.
He was even tempted to join his wife in her laughter, but he found he couldn’t.
After all, he had to save his face. His wife was laughing at him, and he had to
do something here.
“Very
nice, Sally.” He chided her coolly, pretending as if he was angry with her
whence he was not. Well, he was miffed, but he wasn’t angry at all.
“I-I’m
sorry. I…I…oh!” Sally gasped between her laughter, wiping a tear away as she
attempted to have a firm hold on the baby’s body. The baby didn’t wake up
miraculously and continued her sleeping soundly. However, he noticed the baby
starting to slip off Sally’s grasp and rushed with such a blinding speed to
catch her as Sally failed to maintain her balance and dropped the baby
eventually. Sally let out a surprised gasp herself, but sighed in relief as she
noticed Wu Fei’s arm rested securely around the baby’s tiny frame, her breath a
little bit shaky. She raised her eyes apologetically at her husband whom in
return gazed into her own eyes in chastise, although she could also distinguish
a hint of amusement there. Noticing that Wu Fei did not intend to lose his hold
on the baby, she withdrew her arms and let her husband cradling the little one
to his chest, anticipation in her face as speculations swirled in her head.
Wu
Fei actually rocked the baby gently and smiled tenderly at her, much to Sally’s
astonishment. Could it be that he learnt something?
“You’re
beautiful like a flower, my daughter.” Sally smiled solemnly as she listened to
her husband’s low timbre, her heart full of aching happiness at the fact Wu Fei
finally acknowledged the fact he had a daughter, “But you’re also brave. You
came to this world alone, without accompaniment of others, only in the presence
of you mother and I. Therefore…” Sally held her breath as she noticed Wu Fei
transferred his attention to her, his face hard, serious.
“We
will name her Ang Hwa, Sally.”
Sally
felt her throat drying as she attempted a squeak, “Why? Why ‘Red Flower’?”
Smiling,
Wu Fei diverted his attention back to Ang Hwa and answered as he traced a
finger along the baby’s smooth jaw-line, almost in a whisper, “She’s so
beautiful…so pretty. She is a flower…” He raised his eyes and gazed deeply into
Sally’s eyes as he continued, “She would be the ‘Heiress’, the ‘Respectable’,
the ‘Grand Warrior’. She would be strong and brave…thorny like a rose in the
middle of wild wind. ‘Red Flower’, Ang Hwa.” Then he extended his arm to Sally
as he commanded her to come closer, his other arm still holding his baby very
carefully, “Come, wife.”
Sally’s
lower lips was quivering as she controlled her tears, tentatively snuggled her
body against her husband’s. It was ironic. She had always wished for this
situation, but it only happened in the most forbidding circumstances. How
inconvenient. She sighed in comfort as she sensed Wu Fei’s arm rested on the
side of her body, drawing her even closer, his warmth radiating with every move
he made.
“Chang
Ang Hwa…” she murmured softly, “it’s beautiful, Wu Fei…”
She
didn’t have to look at him to know that he was smiling. She could sense it. She
had always been like that for as long as she could remember. She didn’t know
when she started to understand his feelings intuitively. She just knew. She
lifted her face as she sensed Wu Fei’s eyes on her, returning the gaze with the
same intensity she could muster. There was something she didn’t see before in
those dark pool of eyes. Something…warm and caressing.
Temptation.
It gnawed Wu Fei’s mind with its all might, clouding him with such a raw need
to embrace his wife and just…kiss her, without the knowledge of the world
falling before his very eyes. The temptation was so strong he couldn’t resist
it, his dark eyes devouring the sight of his wife’s lush red lips. Slowly, he
lowered his face to meet those lips, nibbling it tenderly as they brushed against
his own. Sally knew it was not the time nor the occasion, but she let herself
fall prey to the enticement. Her head swarmed with excitement as she retuned Wu
Fei’s kiss with equally slow by burning passion, clinging onto the front part
of his shirt.
Then…somehow,
in the middle of the passionate embrace, a great explosion occurred.
It
happened just a few metres from their secluded spot.
It
destroyed a part of the basement’s ceiling.
